2018 Gala

Boys & Girls Club of the Bemidji Area annual gala raises over $100,000 for kids

Investors in the Boys & Girls Club of the Bemidji Area set the pace for annual giving by raising more than $100,000 for Club kids at its annual gala, “An Evening of Love for our Kids,” on Feb. 9 at the Hampton Inn & Suites.

The sold-out event helps fund a variety of Club services, including homework assistance, healthy after-school snacks, transportation from school to the Club, mentors, time in the gym, physical fitness challenges, time in the art room and access to technology and STEM activities. Donors also help provide children with opportunities to volunteer, garden, spend time with staff and learn how to avoid harmful behaviors such as bullying and drug and alcohol use.

“We are grateful to our generous donors, sponsors and volunteers who helped us reach that record-setting goal,” said Andrea Ohnstad, executive director. “Club staff provide a safe place for children after school and in the summer, times when children are most at risk and in need of a safe and engaging place to interact with caring professionals and peers.”

The gala is the Club’s largest fund-raising event of the year and helps set the pace to achieve a $765,000 annual budget to maintain the Club facilities and provide programs that are affordable to every child who needs a safe place to go after school and in the summer.

The evening featured a diamond raffle by Ken K. Thompson Jewelry, as well as a live and silent auction. Keynote speakers were Allie Shimkus, 2018 Youth of the Year, and Eli Muellenbach, a Bemidji State University student and program staff member from 2015-2018.

Event planners are Chad Harding, gala chair, Jillian Baudeck, Marcy Frenzel, Briana Nupdal, Dana Wolff, Sue Engel, Sharon Fruetel, Vickie Meyer and Kelly Sommerville.
